Carabus gigas – The great Capricorn beetle is a species belonging to the family of terrestrial runners (Carabidae). It is the largest European beetle reaching a length of about 40 to 70 mm. Its back is black and shiny. The elytra are oval, strongly convex and covered with about 15 rows of granular tubercles. They reach the age of 3 years and more. It is present in Macedonia, Albania, Serbia, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Austria, Hungary, Romania and Slovenia. In the Galichica National Park, it mostly lives on subalpine high mountain pastures.
